Kensington v WCC

Kensington won by 4 wickets

The most beautiful day in Dulwich saw the Weekenders snatch an honourable defeat from the jaws of embarrassment. A strong batting line up on paper remained just that as the swashbuckling big guns each returned to the pavilion scratching their heads. The sight of Morty slapping the first change seamer, Chetan Singh, for three fours in his first over, had cheered the ambitious ‘Enders. As the pavilion talked vociferously of carving and smashing their way to 400, it was noted with much consternation that, by the end of his second over, Chetan had apparently bowled a double-wicket maiden. The resolute Hogben looked like he was the man to steer the side to respectability, however, when he became Singh’s fifth wicket with the score at 87-5, things looked pretty glum. Happily, Husaini, freed from booster seats and squeaky toys, lustily carted the Kensington bowling around the ground to joint top score with Hoggers. Latterly, a quick-fire 17 from Mike Harvey took the ‘Enders, to the considerable delight of several senior players, to an early tea at 128 all out.

Fearing humiliation, the boys roared out after their pasta and garlic bread. Naturally, Kensington ground their way to 53 for no loss. An excellent 14 over spell from Mike Harvey, ably supported by Cooper and Swift saw Kensington endure squeaky-bum time at 93 for 6. Sadly, his being his day, Chetan, fresh from his six wickets, wandered down the steps to nudge and nurdle Kensington to a four wicket victory with five overs remaining. A particular highlight of the innings was the black-trousered substitute fielder catching out the oppo’s best batsman on the boundary.

A lovely day against one of the nicest teams we play ended with Kensington’s sponsors Cobra Beer providing all the players with free booze.
Excellent.
