NASH CRASH

Played at Mottingham
22.5.05
National Theatre 164 all out
WCC 166-6 WCC won by 4 wickets

John Sackville silenced his critics by not only turning up but also buying a round of drinks. A pedant might point out that he was playing for the opposition, but in a touching display of loyalty to the Weekenders he made just three runs and didn’t take a wicket.

Vettikat swung the ball downwind every bit as effectively as last year. Unfortunately Gallagher wasn’t given the chance to break his longest-ever over record but there was promising off spin from Kim and more lively seamers from the silver-toed Corey Swift.

The Enders opening pair of Harvey and Chiari set off to chase down 158 in perky style. Harvey showing the benefit of some recent coaching (there was an on-drive of which Greg Chappell would have been proud). Chiari, who has been in prime for his club fought hard to adjust down to this level but found his touch and went on to pass fifty. Gallagher and Johstone maintained the momentum before the choke began, and d’Inverno and Swift were left to biff the last eight runs for victory.

At the start of the day we were down to ten men but Webster came to our rescue and took two good wickets bowling into the teeth of a bitter gale. But it was off the park where his economy rate was especially impressive. After being driven to and from the game he asked to be dropped off in the Holloway Road and, pointing to a side turning, said ‘My car’s parked just here’ ‘If you’ve got a car’ asked the driver, ‘Then why have I had to drive you all day?’ ‘I didn’t want to be bothered with finding the way and stuff.’
