Boughton

Gentlemen - Mr Hogben's stats tell most of the story.  But in marginally
more depth...

Thorough-going match management from Mr Maloney assembles around 13 players
at various points during the week, but it's with no more than 9 that the
team heads into darkest Kent.  Monsoon rains on M2 clear shortly after
Gillingham, and thankfully don't affect our playing chances

Our nine, however, is two more than opposition eventually take to field with
- their side depleted by mystery absence, flood, bad flood, and worse flood
respectively.

WCC bat - runs tight as ball swings from one end, but more flow from other
- change bowlers supply high donkey drops, which start to disappear.  After
it becomes clear opposition will not be reinforced, WCC regrettably withdraw
one of two loaned fielders.

Lower order (well, middle order if we had a proper lower order that batted
down to 11) batsmen profit from weaker attack and big gaps in field to
accelerate scoring rate - Sackville, Harvey P and Nicholas send ball to all
parts of ground, utilising slopes on both sides square of the wicket.

Acting Skipper eventually calls off run accumulation at a round 200.

Attacking fields allow opposition swift start, but skier gives debutant
Nicholas first wicket, and cunningly set leg side field allows number 3 to
hole out on long hop to Maloney's safe hands at short long leg, as it were.

Bowling changes intoduce Harvey M to off-spinning duties, and Maloney to
running up and banging it in short of a length... Inspired, it turns out -
Maloney removes dangerous opener in first over with one which stays slightly
low, and then rejoices in fabulous Pope catch low down to remove other
danger man.

Harvey M winkles out tail (or numbers 5&6 if you prefer) and WCC take all
six wickets required for victory by 6.17pm.

Opposition introduce us at pub to Kentish game of ball and trap - it
involves posts, targets, heavy wooden bats, and Mr Maloney will be
conducting coaching lessons in it at a date to be arranged.

Fleet Street Strollers await resurgent WCC, to be bolstered by returning
skipper, whose whereabouts are available from his mobile phone message, a
recording of which is reportedly under offer for sex-line use.  Mr Hogben
would love to hear from you if you want to play on Sunday, down Chessington
way - a good batting strip and smooth outfield await.

Flat.
